Entrepreneurship? But Why?

by | Aug 17, 2021 | 0 comments

Hundreds of thousands of business ventures are launched every year. Each entrepreneur starts their journey with a great idea – a product, technology, service, or even a platform that solve a need in the market. Some become behemoths within their category and some fizzle out after spectacular fireworks launches, while some never even lift off the ground.

There are many reasons for how things work differently for different start-ups, however when I look at the multiple start-ups that I interact with on a regular basis, there are certain things that standout in dominant and successful ones.

Of all the positive spikes they show, one thing that always struck me was their clarity of purpose.

The reason for their business to exist – whatever you choose to call it, fact remains that businesses and entrepreneurs that have a clearly defined reason for it, do well more often than not. Now I am not saying that you should be in it for larger good of the mankind, or the planet, or the animals (it’s great if you have a cause, but that’s not what I mean). No, instead what I am saying is if you are in it for money, don’t lie to yourselves and spin stories on your reason. If you are in it for the passion, let that passion drive you insane till you create that organization of your dreams. If you are in it for fame, let the limelight motivate you every day to get out of bed and chase your dreams.

Everyone has a reason, the question is not whether the reason is big enough, the question is are you true to your reason! The reasons that are appropriate for one entrepreneurial venture may be completely inappropriate for another. Entrepreneurs must make a bewildering number of decisions, and they must make the decisions that are right for them and their business. And all this stems for why you started in the first place. Ask yourselves these questions before you begin your plunge into the world of entrepreneurship:

  1. What do I want to do?
  2. Why do I want to do it?
  3. What kind of enterprise am I trying to build?
  4. What are the risks and sacrifices this kind of enterprise will demand?
  5. Am I willing to accept those risks and sacrifices for years to come?

Now you may not believe me when I say there is lot to be given up, and there is a lot to be risked on this long and arduous journey of being an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs must reconcile what they want with what they are willing to risk. Because with such high risks, also comes high reward.

When you dream of an idea, and you chase it with every little cell of your body, when you live it, breathe it and become one with that idea, success is guaranteed! The sense of fulfillment, the sense of pride, the sense of purpose – that’s what you become an entrepreneur for.

Because in your arduous entrepreneurial journey, the only thing that will keep you going is the honest why that you always tell yourself.

The only question then that remains is, “What is your why?”
